What Is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the breast. The damaged cells can invade surrounding tissue, but with early detection and treatment, most people continue a normal life.

Facts About Breast Cancer In The United States
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women.
Each year it is estimated that over 230,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will die.
Although breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,350 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 440 will die each year.
Over 2.9 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States today.

2015, an estimated 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among US women, as well as an estimated 60,290 additional cases of in situ breast cancer.
That year, approximately 40,290 US women are expected to die from breast cancer. Only lung cancer accounts for more cancer deaths in women.
Breast cancer incidence rates are highest in non-Hispanic white women, followed by African American women and are lowest among Asian/Pacific Islander women. In contrast, breast cancer death rates are highest for African American women, followed by non-Hispanic white women. Breast cancer death rates are lowest for Asian/Pacific Islander women. Breast cancer incidence and death rates also vary by state.
