OUR

PURPOSE

The purpose of “Pretty Girls that Rock the Mic” is to share information about breast cancer awareness and early detection, inform the community about available resources, raise funds for a breast cancer center/foundation, while showcasing some of Texas’ most talented female artists from diverse genres of music.

The Concert which was first hosted in Austin in 2012, was the vision of Nubia's father and manager, Karriem Williams upon learning that his ex-wife (Nubia's Mom) developed breast cancer in 2011. He wanted to do something musically to channel everyone's fear and pain into something positive that the whole family could involve themselves. The first show was a smashing success and involved the Susan G. Komen/Austin Affiliate which brought in a speaker and highlighted an all-female roster of some of Austin’s finest artists from a diversity of music genres. Although smaller events and shows were held later, there was no major concert in 2013 due to Nubia’s mother’s battle with breast cancer which ended November 2013.  With renewed energy, Nubia Emmon and her team assembled family and friends who joined together and participated in the 2014 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure with follow up in 2015, 2016, and 2017 and they Rocked the Mic in 2016 with an all-star line up. Be sure to purchase your tickets for the upcoming show--the 2023 Concert promises to rock Austin and serve as a treat for everyone!

This event is presented by Nubia Emmon, Inc. and this project has been financed in whole or in part by the City of Austin's Live Music Fund Event Program.

What is a Pretty Girl?

“I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am not your expectations no no
I am not my hair
I am not this skin
I am a soul that lives within”

“Breast Cancer and Chemotherapy
Took away her crown and glory
She promised God if she was to survive
She would enjoy everyday of her life ooh”

-India Arie

A Pretty Girl is defined by her strength,

She is defined by her creativity, her courage

She is Art in Motion

She is Grace under Fire

Her Pretty is her Spirit

Her Pretty lives in the Soul
